Shipwreck Francis A Perkins
Type:
shipwreck, schooner, pilot boat, USA
Built:
1876, New York, USA
Specs:
( 78 x 20 ft ) 52 tons, 9 crew
Sunk:
Monday January 24, 1887
ran aground - 2 casualties
Depth:
80 ft

This tiny wreck produced a number of fine artifacts when first discovered. I am doubtful of the plotted location since it does not match up with the reported depth. In any case, the vessel must have drifted considerably from where it grounded before finally settling in deep water.

Oceanography
Phoenician colonies and voyages.
Modified from The Challenger Reports (summary), 1895

Human populations through time have often flourished near the sea, partly because of the food resources that can be found there, but also because of the ease of transportation of people and cargo by boats. Observations about various organisms and environments were of course a major part of human activities since the earliest times, since the very survival of early Homo sapiens depended on this knowledge to obtain food and provide defense against dangerous plants and animals.
