Canal Boats

These vessels all gave long service on New York State's extensive inland canal system. I expect to be adding to this list, as there are many more, and they are very old. At most, one or two can and should be preserved, but for the rest, reefing is a better fate than being cut up into scrap and melted down in China.

Trinectes maculatus

Size:
to 8"

Habitat:
Soft sandy bottoms, in depths from water's edge to 75 ft. Often found far inland in freshwater.

Description:
This is a right-eyed sole. Identifying characteristics are the lack of a pectoral fin.
