Nice Dip in the Shark River

Went for a nice dive in the Shark River Inlet, south side. The tide was a little early and quite high, with a long slack period. No waves to speak of, an easy climb in and out. About 5-6 ft viz - ok for what I wanted.

The saltwater aquarium has thinned out over the winter. This is not unexpected - many species simply don't live more than a year or two. The Sea Robin that I caught last fall had grown from the size of your thumbnail to the size of your hand, and wasn't helping the situation either. I actually watched him make a meal of the last old silverside.

So I released him back into the wild, where he might find a slightly different place in the food chain. It's all natural. So my goal for the dive was to find a suitably small replacement. In fact, I got two pinky-sized robins, which are right now acclimating to their new surroundings.

I also got a small moon snail while walking the dog on the beach at low tide a while ago. Turns out they're not very interesting to keep. It just buries itself in the sand. The last time I dug it out, it stayed just long enough to grab a mussel, and then disappeared again, dragging it along. Darned thing doesn't even come out in the dark. I'm going to throw it back, next chance I get.
