Captain Steve Nagiewicz

Captain Steve Nagiewicz is the owner & operator of the dive boats Diversion & Diversion II. He has been running his own dive boats since 1986. He is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Master since 1985.  His boats have become a training ground which has seen six of his crew become licensed Captains and either run their own dive boats or others. Captain Steve is a PADI and SSI Dive master for more than 20 years. He is a certified Nitrox Blending Technician and is Tri-Mix certified. He is intimately familiar with local waters and the thousands of shipwrecks available to New Jersey divers, (many of which he has found) he has logged over 4000 sport, technical/mixed gas, and commercial dives.

Steve has worked in the commercial diving/oceanographic business for over 20 years. He has conducted side-scan surveys, oceanographic and scientific research for universities and industry and search and salvage of shipwrecks, bulkhead and hull inspections, TAT cable survey and support services and underwater repair.

Careers prior to running the boat, Steve was Domestic Sales Manager for Diving Unlimited International (DUI), the leading manufacturer of dry suits and diving equipment. He also has worked on the Responsible Diver Program since it's inception. He also managed the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook for the State of New Jersey. These labs house NOAA, National Marine Fisheries, MAST, Rutgers and the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium.

New venues include technical editing/writing for DVD's and school science teacher.

An accomplished author and oceanographer, Captain Steve has written over 100 articles about diving, oceanography and shipwreck archeology for numerous national publications and newspapers and has worked on many various scientific research projects about the oceans. He is a past-contributing editor for the Dive Report a dive industry trade publication, writing a regular column about dive boats.

He frequently lectures about diving and shipwrecks and also operates a program for children called Oceanography for Kids, which is an interactive visual program on topics about the oceans and NJ marine life. He has lectured at the New Jersey State Aquarium, for Beneath the Sea, Our World Underwater, DEMA several other diving symposiums, and many dive shops and clubs around the United States, as well as over 50 local / regional school systems. Captain Nagiewicz also has appeared on episodes of Dive Wreck Valley and Divers Down television series, as well as on the News 12-NJ, The WB channel 11, MSG, Cable One, Sports Channel, Philly Cable, NESN and The Outdoor Network and on the Discovery Channel in a documentary about the Andrea Doria.

Capt. Nagiewicz has also been a vocal activist in promoting scuba diving and New Jersey tourism and has been appointed to the Ocean County Tourism Advisory Council by the Chosen Freeholders of Ocean County.  He serves a three year term from 2003 to 2005 helping to advise on scuba and maritime tourism opportunities in Ocean County and throughout the State of NJ.

Steve has also been elected Chairman of the Shore Region Tourism Council for Monmouth and Ocean Counties in New Jersey.  This is a non-profit organization that develops and promotes tourism at the NJ Shore and elected Chairman of the Jersey Shore Tourism Corporation which markets and promotes tourism at the Jersey Shore through various media outlets and the internet.

Capt. Nagiewicz is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Princeton, NJ based Shark Research Institute.  He is fellow of the Explorers Club and served as member of the Board of Directors  and was the Executive Director of the Explorers Club for several years in New York.  He was the chairman for the Philadelphia Chapter for three years   He also ran many fund-raising dinners and events for the Club.   Capt. Steve is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and also belongs to several charter boat, oceanographic and marine historical societies and associations.

Capt. Steve has been featured on local/national network news programs about diving and shipwrecks and was a presenter at the famed "Writers of the Future Awards Ceremony in Hollywood, CA as part of the L. Ron Hubbard awards for Writing and Illustrations in Science Fiction.

When he's not diving or researching shipwrecks, Captain Steve can be found with his son Travis. He collects rare nautical books, maps, charts, and prints. Is an avid reader of adventure novels, likes target shooting.  He is a also NY Yankees and Giants fan.

Before his career in the commercial diving business, Steve also worked in the business sector as a salesman and sales manager for many large corporations, such as: GAF, Gulf & Western, RG Barry, Duofold, Basic Four.

Captain Steve lives in Brick, New Jersey with his wife Barbara and son, Travis. Barb is an Occupational / Certified Hand Therapist  and has been diving for over 15 years, she has a wreck sunk on the Carlson Reef...the Barbara Ann Barge sunk in her name, June 2003. Travis starts wreck diving by making his first NJ wreck dive on the Travis Tug, sunk in his honor on the Sea Girt Reef on Halloween, 2001..
